Historical background

CHÂTEAUDUN - VISCOUNTCY OF CHÂTEAUDUN - RAOUL DE CLERMONT

(1264-1302)

Geoffroy V, Count of Châteaudun (1235-1253), was succeeded by his daughter who married Robert de Dreux (1253-1259). Alix de Dreux, their daughter, engaged to Raoul de Clermont, lord of Nesle, future constable of France, inherited the county, but Simon de Clermont was baillister in 1264. Raoul died on July 11, 1302 at the battle of Courtrai alongside Robert d'Artois and Jacques de Châtillon who preferred to die rather than surrender to the Flemish militias. His son, Guillaume Ier (1302-1311) succeeded him and was the last viscount of Châteaudun. The coinage of Châteaudun is mentioned in the ordinance of 1315.
