Commentary


Variété avec le nom de l’empereur (légende dégénérée) du côté du monogramme alors qu’il se trouve ordinairement du côté de la croix. Légende dégénéré pour un type postérieur à Charles II le Chauve.

CHARLES II LE CHAUVE / THE BALD

(20/06/840-6/10/877)

Charles the Bald became king on the death of his father, Louis the Pious, on June 20, 840. At the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the Carolingian empire was shared between Louis' three sons. Lothair receives Lotharingia, Louis the German, Francia Orientalis and Charles Francia Occidentalis. The type with the Christian legend predates 864 and the reform of the Edict of Pîtres, but it must be later than 843. It may have been struck between 850 and 860.
