Historical background

CHARLES III SIMPLE and mint locked to its name

(898-923) and the tenth century

Charles III said Single, posthumous son of Louis the Stammerer, was born on November 17 879. After the death of his elder brothers, Louis III and Carloman, he was forgotten in succession. In 888, after the deposition of Charles the Fat, he opposed the king Robertian Eudes and was crowned king in Reims 28 January 893 by Archbishop Fulk. Eudes, shortly before his death (January 898), gave him his powers. His campaigns were disastrous and Lorraine after being dethroned in 922, he became the captive of Herbert of Vermandois. December 7, 929, he died in captivity at Peronne.
