Obverse


Obverse description : Buste radié de Caracalla à gauche, vue de trois-quarts en avant, tenant un bouclier sur l’avant-bras gauche, levant la main droite en position d’adventus ou de salut (au Soleil?). Le bouclier présente un renforcement clouté sur les bords et deux cercles concentriques au centre. On note dans le champ derrière la tête la pointe d’une lance ou d’une flèche. Un baudrier semble soutenir le glaive dont la poignée est apparente devant le bouclier. Les deux rubans de la couronne radiée descendant derrière la tête.
Obverse legend : AUT. K.M. AU .ANTWNEINOS .S (Autokrator Kaisar Markos Aurhlios Antwneinos Sebastos).
Obverse translation : (L’empereur césar Marc Aurèle Antonin auguste).

Reverse


Reverse description : Aigle debout à gauche, les ailes déployées, la tête et la queue tournées à droite, tenant dans son bec une couronne feuillée ; les pattes de l’aigle sont posées sur un thyrse ou un foudre.
Reverse legend : DHMARC. EX. UPATOS TO. D., (Dhmarcikhs Ex Ousias Upatos D).
Reverse translation : (Revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne consul pour la quatrième fois).

Commentary


Dans la base TSP maintenue par Michel Prieur, quatorze exemplaires sont maintenant répertoriés, deux en musée, Paris ex collection Seyrig, Berne ex collection Righetti. Notre exemplaire, qui provient de la trouvaille dite de Syrie 1930, est le 0915_002.

Augustus

After Geta's assassination, Caracalla decreed the "damnatio memoriæ" of his brother. The "Constitution Antoniniana" was promulgated in 212. All the inhabitants of the Empire became Roman citizens. The following year he undertook a campaign in Germania and won numerous victories over the Germans, Iapyges and Goths. He received the title of "Germanicus". The end of the reign was marked in 215 by the Monetary Reform and the creation of the Antoninianus. Caracalla begins a final campaign against the Parthians. He is assassinated after having celebrated his vicennalia.
