Commentary

Ce type monétaire est de la plus extrême rareté. Nous n’avons relevé aucun exemplaire dans les ventes des dernières années. Le monnayage de Maximilien Emmanuel de Bavière pour Namur est un monnayage éphémère, d’autant plus rare pour les espèces d’or, réservées à l’usage de monnayage de prestige. Le double souverain est hors cote dans tous les ouvrages consultés. Nous sommes là en présence d’une pièce d’exception !.

Maximilian Emmanuel of Bavaria is governor of the Netherlands under Charles II. He chose the side of Philip V during the War of Spanish Succession. At the beginning of 1712, King Louis XIV of France ceded the last scrap of the Spanish Netherlands to Maximilian Emmanuel of Bavaria. During the peace negotiations of 1713, the Netherlands were awarded to Charles of Austria, but Maximilian Emmanuel kept his provinces of Namur and Luxembourg, which he still held, as long as his Germanic states were not evacuated by Austrian troops.
