ARGOLIS - ARGOS

(3rd - 1st century BC)

Argos according to mythology had been one of the main cities of the kingdom of Agamemnon with Mycenae. Argos, very soon found itself the capital of Dorian amphictyonia. Phidion of Argos is described as one of the creators of Aegina coinage. The city of Argos dedicated a special cult to the solar Apollo, of which the wolf is one of the symbols and which the Argives chose for their coins, the manufacture of which began at the beginning of the 5th century BC.. -VS. The Argives opposed the Lacedaemonians. They remained neutral during the Persian invasion of Xerxes in 480 BC.. -VS. They captured Mycenae in 468 BC. -VS. Neutral at the start of the Peloponnesian War, Argos joined the Athenian alliance after the Peace of Nicias in 421 BC. -VS. Argos was defeated at Mantinea in 418 BC. -VS. and once again suffered the Spartan yoke. In 362, Argos allied with the Thebans, always against Sparta before falling under the protection of Philip II of Macedonia. After Alexander's death and the Lamiac War of 322 BC. -VS. , Argos entered the Achaean league in 280 BC. -VS. The league was dissolved in 146 BC. -VS. after the capture of Corinth by the Romans.
