Historical background

ACHAIA - ACHAEAN LEAGUE - DYME

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Dyme, the westernmost city of Achaia was originally formed from eight villages. It joined the Achaean league from the 5th century BC. It fell under Spartan domination at the end of the Peloponnesian War. It was liberated from Sparta by the Theban Epaminondas in 367 BC and then came under Macedonian rule in 331 BC. The city then followed the fate of the Achaean league. During the First Macedonian War under Philip V, Dyme was sacked by the Romans in 208 BC. The city followed the fate of the League until 146 BC and its dissolution by Q. Fabius Maximus after the capture of Corinth. Pompey settled a contingent of defeated pirates there in 67 BC. Caesar founded the Roman colony of Colonia Iulia Dumaeorum.
